We conduct copyright searches to assist our clients in identifying potentially conflicting rights holders. We help our clients select, register, buy, and sell copyrighted works. We also perform due diligence, draft and negotiate purchase and sale agreements, and audit our clients’ copyright portfolios.
Our attorneys have extensive experience in conducting asset valuations and we have prepared many important copyright license agreements. Our attorneys are also well versed in complex areas such as the termination of transfers and recovery of copyrights.
We provide consultation to clients concerning the unauthorized reproduction, display, distribution, and performance of their works or the creation of derivative works. In many instances, we are able to resolve disputes through negotiations. When settlement is not possible, however, we often file and defend our clients against lawsuits alleging copyright infringement and other related claims. We have handled thousands of cases in federal courts and before the Copyright Royalty Tribunal. Occasionally, we have also represented clients in litigation involving copyright issues before state courts.
In the course of litigation, we often retain the services of experts in various fields such as computer programming and music to ascertain the extent to which alleged rights in a particular work are original or the extent to which such original expressions have been copied or otherwise misused.
Our attorneys are actively involved in a number of professional organizations that promote the interests of copyright owners, including the Copyright Society of the United States, the American Bar Association, and American Intellectual Property Law Association.
